Emperor Nikolai is the rich and eccentric robot emperor of the Robo-Hungarian Empire, described by President Nixon as "an insane dictator and a heck of a bowler". In an interview with journalists Nikolai described himself as "just a humble emperor, with a big, big crown!" In truth, Nikolai had grown tired of his life of authority and riches and yearned to experience life as a normal commoner.

Emperor Nikolai visited New New York in 3010 to give a speech at the United Nations. He arrived with his entourage aboard his extravagant caviar-powered yacht RMS Overkill which would serve as his residency during his time in the city, were it not for his encounter with Bender Bending Rodríguez who was trying to rob him of his big, big crown. Bender, whose mind was in the body of Amy Wong, convinced Nikolai to trade bodies with him so that Emperor Nikolai could finally experience life as a lowly bending unit while, perhaps more importantly, Bender could enjoy life as a fabulously wealthy and influential emperor, while also agreeing to fill in for Nikolai at a speech to the United Nations General Assembly. When Bender finds out that Farnsworth had run off with his body, he instead switched minds with the wash bucket, passing it off to Nikolai as his original form. After the transfer, Nikolai meets with Fry, eager to have the full peasant experience in their, by his standards, shabby apartment. Fry, however, had previously swapped his body with Zoidberg, who was quick to look past the irregularities in favor of having a friend, leading to him accidentally flooding the condo, causing a gas leak and lastly blowing up the penthouse when lighting a cigar for his new mate. Nikolai, unfamiliar with the ordinary lifestyle, while not fulfilled in his expectations, he found the happening excitingly novel, later thanking Bender for showing him how awful the lives of non-royals are, promising to use his wealth to help normal people. When everyone returns to their original state, Bender's scheme wound up unsuccessful as he had taken the crown, but forgetfully stored it in Nikolai's torso compartment rather than his own.
